Yes, you can! With an iOS and Android smart phone, you can identify almost 90% of the card technologies on the market. There is a limitation on iOS which is, it is not able to detect Mifare cards at all. This is due to Apple iOS limitation. Please use an Android if you would like to check if the card is Mifare.
